It was asked of me… should I send out Holiday Cards to casting people and such… My answer was simply “HELL YES”  what a great way to keep your face in front of the people that you want to hire you!

Make sure its not stupid, and in GOOD TASTE!  But for sure do it.  Even go the extra mile and hand write the address, and a personal note to everyone, it shows that you CARE!

This business is crazy, but maintaing great Public Relations is KEY, and this is one easy way to do that, send them to everyone you know in the business, and who knows maybe you will get a great audition, and a job out of it!

Cannot hurt!

HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

these guys really hit the nail on the head with this one.  Not only is it funny as hell!  but its TRUE!!!

This is a great question!  If you agent is doing their job, and you are doing your job (of getting call backs, and booking a gig here and there, and are in good touch with your agent on a regular basis…) you should be getting out at least two times per week, and even more for commercials.

You need to be promoting yourself on a constant basis… via the web, your own web site, twitter, blogs, actors access, etc… and I would still suggest sending out no less than 25 hard copy head shots / resumes on a weekly basis to the casting directors.

If you are not getting out at least twice per week, you should take a deep look at what you are doing to assist in that.  Maybe you are sitting and waiting for the phone to ring… wrong… you need to make it ring.  No agent owes you anything at all.  You need to be an active participant in your acting career for absolute sure.

Your agent will bust their ass for you if you help them and keep in good contact with them.  If you are a “I’m waiting for the phone to ring kind of person” you will not have that agent for long.

Again this is just my two cents, but it has kept me from the need to get a day job for over twenty five years now…   And I’ve had the same agent the whole time!

A good acting website, should be a very simple layout, and very clean.  The pages that you really need are the following:

Home page – Introduction of who you are and what you do.

Bio – Which is the one page of you!  Who you are, what are your dreams, and where have you come from, and why are you a great actor.

Resume – Just like the one on the back of your head shot, same format, and have the ability to print it right from your website

Photos – do not over do a photo gallery, put up your main shots that you have on your 8 x 10′s and maybe 10 more, that show you much different than the others.  You want variety… do not put up 100 of them either, as its just too much.

Contact – a way for people to reach you… and for god sake do not put your address or phone number, have them send you an email.

Mailing list – so you can inform everyone that signs up what your next appearance will be.

Demo reel – Where you can show at least one 3-5 minute reel of what you have done.  And maybe eve have two or three, but no more than that.  You can also and should also put up your voice reel if you have one.

That really about covers it.  You do not want that site in 100% flash, otherwise no search engine will list you and it will be harder to find you.  And you need to register your name as you .com or .net address.  Do not use this site for anything other than your acting career… if you want more than this build another site.

Hope this helps!  Again the ONE PLACE I have found that does all of this right for $19.95 per month is here:  MYACTINGSITE

Here is a good example of a great website

Here is a good example of a poor website

How to make it as an actor
First thing- learn to act!!!  Sign up for an acting class! If you have no idea where to find one. sign up at myactingsite.com and our resource center can help.
Acting classes are also a great place to network. Other actors have agents, are possibly working on projects that you may be right for. One never knows. For example; Jason Patric had just been cast in “LOST BOYS” he was in an acting class with Jami Gertz, he recommended her for the role and a career was born (true story) !! Yes miracles do happen in acting class so find a good one and start your journey.

Secondly- as a young actor self promotion is critical so start sooner than later. True fact; Robert DeNiro had shots of himself in every character imaginable. He had photos of himself as a cop, fireman, taxi driver (who would have known), gangster! You name it ! In Bobby’s…..oops…I meant in Mr. DeNiro time the Internet was not available but he self promoted with the means available. Today you have the most powerful tool to self promote imaginable. So sign up at myactingsite.com and start promoting. Who out there is the new DeNiro or Meryl Streep? The powers that be must first see your work. So set up your web site, drop off a card (and a picture) with your web address attached and ask them to take a chance and view your brilliance!!

Third- find a good photographer! Did I mention that myactingsite.com has a photographers list to choose from?  All that’s really needed is a good theatrical shot (somewhat serious) and a commercial shot that shows a smile with teeth. Yes to be in commercials one must have a nice set of chompers. Unless of course one is being cast as the evil witch and…well in that case…yellow, brown and missing teeth are welcome. Also myactingsite.com has Dentists avail…only kidding!!
Word to the wise; if photographers promise to make you famous if you spend thousands of dollars!!  Run for the hills!  Go to myactingsite.com and pick out a few photographers, make a couple of calls. Check out their web sites. Evaluate their work and make an intelligent decision based on what you like. Don’t be afraid to ask for prices. Get all you worries out of the way before the shoot because it does wonders for how great you’ll look on that very important day.

Forth- Okay so now you have pictures, a resume, a web site and talent in your back pocket because you studied hard and are now ready to find an agent. Great!  Where do you start?  Well…now that you made friends in your acting class, start networking.  Call SAG and get the list of agents! They have them all !!  Get a list of agencies that you’re interested in working with. Put your package together; picture, resume and a introductory letter expressing your interest in working with them.  Have your web site address on everything (pic’s, resume, cards) because something could get lost in the shuffle. Make sure your letter states that you will be following up with a phone call within the next few days. This way it isn’t a cold call and you have reason to assume they already know who you are. They better!! You’re going to be a huge star some day.!!
Contact with agents always work best when someone introduces or recommends you. However many a agents have been gotten by following the steps stated above so break a leg and start self promoting!

Now, if any agent EVER needs up front money to find you work!  Again, run for the hills ! At myactingsite.com you can be sure to get correct and honest information. Agents work for you and get paid when you make money!!  END OF STORY!! When you land that SERIES REGULAR ROLE!!  Trust me, they’ll be very happy picking up their check for the next five years without having to do much else. After all, you’ll be working!  They can’t send you on an audition! You’re busy working!  Okay maybe during your off season but you’re still busy traveling the world, spending all the money you just made!  Still busy!  Keep all this in mind when you’re picking the agent that’s going to make a bundle off of you. After all you’re the next DeNiro or Streep. Sound crazy? Its the truth!  Just ask Tom Cruise’s agent or Will Smith or my favorite Bobby. Fact is Booby’s agent has never had to do anything other than take the call and negociates a nice pay day. Anyway….I’m sure you get the idea.

My kid just landed a multiple day player role on a show because she has a web site.  This is so cool too me.  The casting director said they brought in over 150 kids for this part, and they could find no one that fit.  She searched the web, found my kids site, and called her in.  She booked the gig that day.  Now tell me having a web site as an actor is not important…  ITS KEY!!! you have to promote what you do in order to make it.

The casting director, printed my kids picture and resume right from her site, and that was that.  this is a great feature of the service you get at MYACTINGSITE !

Anyway I am happy to share this good news with everyone, and it really hits the point… if you do not have a web site create one, or get one somewhere.  You can only be found and brought in for an audition and possibly get the part.  Nothing wrong with that.

Technology can be useful!
